“Data-driven journalism is the future,” insists Tim Berners-Lee.

Journalists will need to develop familiarity with digital dataset interrogation tools such as MySQL, PHP and Python, in order to discover the real patterns, trends and stories which lurk beneath the proliferation of raw data now being digitally harvested.

“Often, disruption comes from new technologies. These technologies are not necessarily brand new, and they certainly are not able to rapidly destroy the businesses of existing market leaders. It can take a while for their technologies to become mainstream, and of course, many never do. But if a company with a great technology is able to use it to really improve a manufacturing process while lowering costs, then it has a chance of winning market share, and eventually disrupting the businesses of old, incumbent companies.
